Grant writing workshops for BU Studentship Competition – Tuesday 31 January and Wednesday 1 February To assist staff in preparing applications for the internal PhD funding competition John Wakeford, Director of the Missenden Centre, is coming to BU to deliver two one-day workshops on Tuesday 31 January and Wednesday 1 February. The workshops will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm and will provide an opportunity to learn more about bid writing in general as well as honing applications for the studentships. |

Global Learning Seminar Series – Wednesday 1 February As part of the Global Learning Seminar Series, Gaynor Smith of the British Red Cross, will present a seminar exploring the concepts of humane treatment, distinction and restraint, while considering the application of these laws in modern warfare. The interactive workshop, titled: ‘Wars are brutal… but not lawless’ will be in the Stevenson Lecture Theatre from 1pm to 2pm on Wednesday 1 February. All are welcome. |

Save the date: Queen’s Award Celebration – Friday 24 February All staff and students are invited to attend a University event to celebrate BU’s Queen’s Anniversary Prize. Celebrations are planned on both campuses on Friday 24 February, when Vice-Chancellor Professor John Vinney and other BU representatives will attend the Buckingham Place ceremony to formally receive the award from Her Majesty, The Queen and HRH, the Duke of Edinburgh. In addition, from 4.30pm in The Atrium, Poole House, there will be a food and drink reception for staff and students, coinciding with the return of the Buckingham Place party. More details will be published on the Staff Portal in the coming weeks. |
Disruption to the U3 bus service The U3 bus service will not be able to travel along the full length of Holdenhurst Road towards Springbourne from today for three weeks due to emergency gas works. From Lansdowne Campus the service will travel to the Wellington Road roundabout and then double back on itself, travel via St Paul’s Road and the A338 to the exit at Richmond Park Road and continue as normal. The journey from Talbot Campus to Lansdowne Campus will not be affected. Please click here for a map of the affected area. |
Staff Survey 2012 is now open Every member of staff at BU is invited to complete the Staff Survey 2012. The survey provides you with the opportunity to give feedback and comments on your experience as a member of staff. Conducted independently by Capita, the survey will be distributed to all staff by email or post and all responses are anonymous and confidential. The deadline for completion of the questionnaire is Monday 13 February. |

School of Applied Sciences research seminars The School of Applied Sciences is running another series of seminars this academic year that are themed around ecological and anthropological research. Topics will include counterfeit medicines and the evolution of running in humans. The seminars are open to all staff and students and run until March 2012.

Display Screen Equipment (DSE) remedial equipment recycling The University’s Health and Safety Team have instigated an internal recycling scheme for DSE remedial equipment (foot-rests, monitor raisers, document holders etc). All areas of the University have ongoing expenditure regarding such equipment and often, due to office moves, staff leaving or no longer having a requirement etc, this equipment can become surplus. |
School of Health and Social Care Open Research Seminar – Wednesday 8 February Staff and students are invited to attend a lunchtime seminar in the School of Health & Social Care titled: ‘Constructing vulnerability: the problems of virtual cross-country research on the curriculum’. Southern Universities Research Excellence Framework event – Wednesday 22 February BU will be hosting a half day Research Excellence Framework (REF) event, supported by the REF team, on Wednesday 22 February to which all staff are invited to attend. This event will provide an update on the current developments with the REF and the confirmed REF panel documentation, focusing specifically on the assessment of impact within each of the four Main Panels. |

Traffic lights to be replaced at Cemetery Junction From Monday 16 January works will be carried out to replace the traffic lights at Cemetery Junction. It is anticipated that this will take four weeks and will inevitably cause delays when travelling inter campus. In order to enable the works the number of traffic lanes will be reduced with temporary four-way traffic signals being required for two weeks, from Saturday 28 January. |

Relationship Awareness Workshop – Friday 23 March An Interpersonal Relationship Skills (using the Strength Deployment Inventory) workshop is being run on Talbot Campus on Friday 23 March. This workshop is intended to give you an insight into people’s motivations and how they impact on our own and other’s behaviours and perceptions. It will help to give you an insight into dealing with people who you find more difficult to build relationships with and give you a strategy for working with them. The Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI®) is an effective and widely used self-development tool that helps us to understand what really makes people tick. |

You're Brilliant Student Rep and Staff Awards The Students’ Union have launched a new award to run alongside the ‘You’re Brilliant’ Staff Award, to recognise the work of Student Reps at BU. Any student (including Reps), or member of staff can nominate any current Student Rep for an award. |
‘No Strings’ Badminton sessions for staff Staff-only ‘No Strings’ Badminton sessions are now running every Thursday from 7pm to 8pm. Members of staff looking for some fun and exercise can go along to sportBU reception, Talbot Campus. Sessions cost £1.50 each and there is no need to book. |
Copyright Licensing Agency staff photocopying survey The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) is running a staff photocopying survey at the University from Monday 16 January to Friday 24 February inclusive. Staff will notice that yellow ‘collection boxes’ have been provided next to various photocopiers within School offices/resources rooms to record details of copyright materials that are being photocopied. Simple instructions are given on posters near collection boxes. |

New midwifery facilities for BU Part of the Midwifery department within the School of Health & Social Care has relocated to refurbished facilities within the grounds of St Mary’s Hospital in Portsmouth. The new facilities include two new lecture theatres each seating 50 students, two seminar rooms, a PC lab, and a three-bed practice skills room with specialist equipment set out like a midwifery delivery suite. |

Academic Offences – identification, prevention and investigation Three new dates have been set for Academic Offences workshops. These sessions are intended to support academic staff in the identification, prevention and investigation of academic offences. The session will include assessment design, detection approaches (including a session on the use and interpretation of Turnitin software) and the processes for dealing with students suspected of having committed academic offences. |
sportBU joins JustPlay campaign BU is part of a new scheme called JustPlay, which aims to get everyone of any age and ability participating in football, putting the enjoyment back into playing sport. BU is offering the chance to play on the new 3G pitches for just £1.50 and up to two hours. The JustPlay sessions will run every Monday from 3pm to 5pm from January until the Easter Break. |

Changes to the service desk in Estates and IT Services Estates and IT Services are launching a new Service Management Suite on Thursday 8 December which will replace Service Desk Express, the current system used to log faults and requests. BU recognised in Queen’s Honours List BU has been awarded The Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education. The award recognises the University’s contribution to world-leading excellence and pioneering development in computer animation. The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes form part of the national honours system and are the most prestigious awards in UK education. BU Chair of the Board of Governors, Sue Sutherland, and Vice-Chancellor Professor John Vinney attended the official prize winners’ reception on Thursday night at St James’s Palace, London.

BU launches a Travel to Work Loan Scheme A new BU interest-free loan scheme is now available to purchase bus and train season tickets or a bicycle and associated safety equipment. This Travel Plan measure has been developed as a part of BU’s continuing efforts to encourage reduced staff dependency on car use and to reduce the environmental impacts of the University. |
